Snow cools elephants at Whipsnade Zoo

Teresa Fisher

Chilled elephants. Snowball fight, anyone?…

What do you do with a hot elephant?

No, it’s not a joke!…

The elephants at Whipsnade Zoo near Dunstable in have been feeling hot and bothered in the recent hot weather.

So the Zoo has called upon The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire to ship in 20 tonnes of snow to cool them down!

The zoo is just 14 miles from The Snow Centre.  With its 160m slope, it is largest indoor ski slope in the UK.  It currently has plenty of excellent offers for families.  These include Adult & Junior Beginner Lessons at half price; a Family Lesson Package (1 hour ski/snowboard lesson for all the family plus refreshments) for £125 (2 adults and up to 2 kids); plus a Family Slope Pass Package (2 adults plus 2 kids) for competent skiers/boarders) for £ 69/£79 (2 hour pass for weekday/weekend) or £99 (all day).

On Bank Holiday Monday 26 August, you will have a chance to try out some indoor ski cross with British Ski Cross Olympic hopeful, Ed Drake.

The GB Olympian Ski Crosser will be hosting a one-day event showcasing Ski Cross prior to the next Olympic Games in Sochi in 2014.

Ski Cross racing in Val Thorens

Ski Cross was first introduced as an Olympic discipline in Vancouver in 2010.  It comprises a start-to-finish course, with skiers/boarders racing head-to-head over a series of artificial turns, bumps and slopes.  It is an undeniably thrilling spectator sport and, on the August bank holiday, you too can have a go at The Snow Centre!
